Travelling to Engelberg is very easy.
Engelberg is situated in the heart of Switzerland and served by three airports – Zurich, Basel and Bern, all of which are less than two hours away. We can discuss more precise travel arrangements and directions with you when you book your stay at Chalet Espen, but in the meanwhile we have included some information below which you might find helpful.
If you are flying into Switzerland from abroad, you are most likely to arrive at Zurich airport, which is served by a number of scheduled and charter airlines (for example Swiss, BA, Lufthansa, Air France and Easyjet, amongst many others). Zurich airport is our favourite as it is modern, spacious, well-equipped and quiet, especially at weekends.
Zurich airport also has a station directly underneath the arrivals terminal, from which there are train services to all parts of the country, including to Engelberg. You can purchase your train ticket at Zurich airport station, or book online before you arrive using the railway company’s website (details below).
Travelling by train is a fast, efficient, cost effective and relaxing way of reaching Engelberg from Zurich airport (via Luzern). Trains depart from the airport for Luzern every 30 minutes, and take one hour. At Luzern you simply catch the mountain railway up to Engelberg, which also takes about an hour.
The trains up to Engelberg are quite small and slow, especially on the steeply climbing track as you approach Engelberg, but it is a very pleasant and relaxing journey. We can meet you at the station and drive you the short distance to Chalet Espen.
Engelberg is also easy to reach by train from other places in Switzerland. The nearby city of Luzern is the gateway for fast inter-city train services throughout Switerland (including Bern, Basel and Geneva airports), and even to neighbouring countries such as France, Germany, Austria and Italy.
For full details about train services, including timetables and fares, as well as information on booking your rail tickets online, you can contact us or have a look at the Swiss railway website (www.sbb.ch), which is written in French, German, Italian and English.
Finally, for those arriving by car, there are motorway connections to Luzern from all areas of Switzerland, and from there it is just 30 minutes drive to Engelberg. Hiring a car at the various airports is easy and often reasonably priced, and the drive to Engelberg takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes from Zurich, Basel or Bern airports. We have parking spaces for about 3 cars at the chalet and there is also a public car park a short walk away.
