Engelberg is not just for the dedicated skier and boarder. We think Engelberg offers more facilities and non-skiing activities than any other resort we have visited. We cannot do justice here to all that is on offer, but here are some highlights.
Tobogganing is a particular favourite with children and those who refuse to grow up. There are two long toboggan runs of 2.5 kilometres and 3.5 kilometres on Brunni and Titlis, or you can try Air Boarding, the new high-tech version of tobogganing.
Cross-country skiers have 36 kilometres of trails, including a 1.5 kilometre route which is flood-lit. There are classic and skating style cross-country trails around the resort, at Gerschnialp on Titlis and at 1800 metres around the Trübsee lake. If you have never tried cross-country skiing we would thoroughly recommend giving it a go, although if you watched it in the Winter Olympics and thought it looked easy, think again!
Those who prefer to take things a little easier can take advantage of 38 kilometres of marked winter walking trails around the resort, as well as at Trübsee and at the top of Titlis. There are also some fantastic routes for snow-shoeing, including at the top of the Fürenalp gondola, which is just for walkers (although we’ve noticed quite a few off-pisters sneaking into the gondola in their eternal search for virgin territory). Fürenalp is off-the-beaten-track at the far end of the resort, making it very peaceful. The views from the restaurant at Fürenalp are stunning and there is a great free toboggan run here too.
The resort also offers 2 ice rinks (one natural outdoor rink and a full-sized indoor rink for those who want to brush up on their spin and jump combinations), curling, ice-climbing, para-gliding, dog-sledding and horse drawn sleigh rides.
For those wishing to come in from the cold, there is an indoor swimming pool and excellent spa facilities.
And if you have had your fill of all that stunning mountain scenery in Engelberg, you can always hop on the train for the short ride to the beautiful lake-side city of Lucerne, with its excellent shopping, galleries, museums and fantastic restaurants. |
