History
Chalet Espen was built in the 17th century and is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Engelberg. Chalet Espen was originally a coaching inn, providing food and shelter for weary travellers arriving on foot or by horse from the valley below - we still have the stones outside to which visitors tied their horses!
In the early days of the Swiss Confederation (which was formed nearby), punishment for law-breakers was quick and harsh. Public hangings took place at a chapel close to the entrance to Engelberg, after which legend has it the spectators would meet at Chalet Espen for a drink.
Location
Chalet Espen is in a beautiful location, opposite the lake at the southern entrance to the resort. There are stunning mountain views from virtually every room in the house.
We are an 8 minute walk from the hustle and bustle of the resort centre, and only 5 minutes walk along a footpath from the main Titlis cable car station (even less if you take a quick short cut by ski or board on your way home). |
